General information about the ingredients used in this supplement product:

(This is NOT product specific and is only listed as educational material)

Vitamin E is a fat soluble essential nutrition and it is also an antioxidant helping to prevent fats and oils from becoming rancid in our body. Vitamin E stops the production of reactive oxygen species formed when fat undergoes oxidation. Naturally occurring vitamin E exists in eight chemical forms alpha-, beta-, gamma-, delta-tocopherol and alpha-, beta-, gamma-, and delta-tocotrienol having varying levels of biological activity. Concentrations of vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol) depend on the liver, which takes up the nutrient after it is absorbed from the small intestine. Antioxidants protect the cells from the damaging effects of free radicals. Selenium is a component of the unusual amino acids selenocysteine and selenomethionine. Selenium is a trace nutrient element in humans which functions as co-factor for reduction of antioxidant enzymes such as glutathione peroxidases and certain forms of thioredoxin reductase found in animals and some plants.

Functions of Vitamin E:

Vitamin E is an antioxidant that destroys free radicals the harmful compounds in the body that damage DNA and even cause cell death. Vitamin E is vital in the formation of red blood cells and it helps the body to use vitamin K. Selenium also plays a role in the working of the thyroid gland, by participating as a co-factor for the three known thyroid hormone deiodinases. Selenium may slow down Hashimotos's disease, in which the thyroid cells are attacked as alien. Vitamin E with Selenium contains antioxidants that work co-dependently in the body to help destroy free radicals. Emerging research suggests that it may not be possible to obtain optimum vitamin E levels through diet alone.

Symptoms of Vitamin E Deficiency:

Symptoms of vitamin E deficiency include muscle weakness, loss of muscle mass, abnormal eye movements, impaired vision and unsteady gait.

Good Food Sources of Vitamin E:

Good food sources of vitamin E are nuts, seeds, and vegetable oils and some significant amounts are available in green leafy vegetables and fortified cereals. Selenium can be obtained from nuts, cereals, meat, fish, and eggs.
