General information about the ingredients used in this supplement product:

(This is NOT product specific and is only listed as educational material)

N-acetyl L-cysteine (NAC) is a derivative of the amino acid cysteine where an acetyl group is attached to this nitrogen atom. Cysteine is named after cystine. Cysteine is a non-essential amino acid which is formed from two molecules of the amino acid cystine. The amino acid cystine consists of two cysteine molecules joined together. Cysteine was discovered in 1810. This sulfur containing amino acid was isolated from animal horn in 1899 but was not recognized as an essential component of proteins. This amino acid is abundant in skeletal and connective tissues, hair and digestive enzymes. Although it is an unstable nutrient and can easily convert into cystine, this does not pose a problem as the body can convert it into each other.

Functions of N-Acetyl L-Cysteine (NAC):

Cysteine is a component of the antioxidant gluthione required to detoxify our body from harmful toxins. It is found in beta-keratin, a protein in nails, skin as well as hair. It produces collagen and also assists in skin elasticity and skin texture. Cysteine is also required in the manufacture of the amino acid taurine and is a component of the antioxidant gluthione. It is useful to detoxify the body from harmful toxins and help protect the brain and liver from damage from alcohol, drugs etc. It strengthens the protective lining of the stomach as well as intestines. Cysteine is essential for the metabolism of a number of essential biochemicals including coenzyme A, heparin, biotin, lipoid acid, and glutathione.

Symptoms of N-Acetyl L-Cysteine (NAC) Deficiency:

No important Cysteine deficiency symptoms are known. In chronic diseases the formation of cysteine from methionine is prevented, resulting in a deficiency.

Good Food Sources of N-Acetyl L-Cysteine (NAC):

Cysteine found in high protein foods such as poultry, wheat, broccoli, eggs as well as garlic, onions and red peppers.
