General information about the ingredients used in this supplement product:

(This is NOT product specific and is only listed as educational material)

L-ascorbic provides the benefits of both vitamin C to the body. Lutein is an antioxidant, which belongs to the carotenoid family. Lutein is a yellow coloured pigment and even though lutein is not classified as a vitamin, dietary lutein is believed to be an essential nutrient for normal vision. N-Acetyl Cysteine (NAC) is a metabolite of the sulfur-containing amino acid Cysteine. Cysteine is present in high protein foods while N-Acetyl Cysteine is not. N-Acetyl Cysteine is produced within the human body. Taurine, generally referred to as a amino acid but it is not a part of the human body’s structural proteins although taurine remains free in the tissues and bloodstream. Vitamin E is a vital nutrient that is a fat-soluble antioxidant, helping to prevent fats and oils from becoming rancid. Vitamin A is a light yellow crystalline compound, also known as retinol, a name given in reference to the participation of this compound in the functions of the retina of the eye.

Functions of Antioxidant Nutrients on the Eye:

Studies have specified that lutein improves heart health, guards our skin against UV damage, decreases diabetes induced oxidative stress, and possesses anti-inflammatory properties. The central part of the retina, called the macula, contains macular pigments in which lutein is concentrated. The yellow coloured pigments shield the retina from damage of the photo-oxidative affect of high-energy light. Lutein can protect the retina against the destructive effects of UV-B radiation. Cysteine plays a role in the sulfation cycle, working as a sulfur donor in phase II detoxification and as a methyl donor in the transformation of homocysteine to methionine. Cysteine also helps synthesize glutathione, one of the body's most essential natural antioxidants and detoxifiers. N-Acetyl-Cysteine is the acetylated form of L-Cysteine. Taurine is one of the most plentiful free amino-acid resembling compounds found in the heart, the skeletal muscles and the nervous system. Taurine also plays a central role in the brain. Vitamin E is a fat-soluble antioxidant and is present in many food items. Vitamin E helps protect cell membranes against damaging free radicals and helps maintain internal and external organs. The human retina has four kinds of photopigments that store vitamin A compounds. One of these pigments, called rhodopsin, is located in the rod cells of the retina. Rhodopsin allows the rod cells to detect small amounts of light, and, thus, plays an essential role in the adaptation of the eye to low-light conditions and night vision.
