Selenium

Selenium has several functions and health benefits. Although it is toxic in large doses, selenium is an essential micronutrient for animals and human beings. Selenium is an essential trace mineral that supports the immune system, a powerful antioxidant that helps fight cell-damaging free radicals caused by stress, pollution, improper diet and more. A recent study confirmed Selenium’s well-known benefits for the immune system – finding that 200 mcg of selenium per day supported immune function as measured by T cell levels. Selenium also have an integral part of thyroid metabolism and function. Selenium is also known to support prostate health. Selenium is an essential trace mineral that works synergistically with vitamin E. As a constituent of glutathione peroxidase, an antioxidant enzyme, selenium neutralises free radicals before they can damage body tissues. Keshan disease, a severe heart disorder, is seen amongst those with severe selenium deficiency and is common in certain areas of China, where the soil is lacking selenium. The selenium content of food varies greatly because of the wide variability of this element in the soil. Accurate levels in food are not available, however whole grains and Brazil nuts are classified as selenium-rich foods. Solgar offers three different Selenium supplement products dosages: 50mcg, 100mcg and 200mcg in capsules or tablets form, depending on your need or suspected selenium deficiency. Solgar also offer yeast free selenium supplements.
