Manganese
Manganese has several functions and health benefits. Manganese is a mineral that activates many enzymes in the body and aids in the utilization of fat. Manganese is an important activator for, and is part of many enzyme systems. It plays a part in protein synthesis and fatty acid metabolism, and is necessary for normal skeletal development and for pituitary gland activity. Manganese ions function as cofactors for a number of enzymes in higher organisms, where they are essential in detoxification of superoxide free radicals. The element is a required trace mineral for all known living organisms. The human body contains about 10 mg of manganese, which is stored mainly in the liver and kidneys. In the human brain the manganese is bound to manganese metalloproteins most notably glutamine synthetase in astrocytes.
