Vitamin B1 or aneurine also known as thiamin (also spelled "thiamine") is a water-soluble B-complex vitamin. Thiamin was isolated and characterized in1920s.Thus it is one of the first organic compounds to be identified as a vitamin. Thiamin, acts as a coenzyme in body metabolism.

Functions of Vitamin B1:

Vitamin B1 helps the nervous system function properly, and is necessary for optimal brain functioning, including muscle functioning, flow of electrolytes in and out of nerve and muscle cells, multiple enzyme processes and carbohydrate metabolism. It stimulates the production of hydrochloric acid necessary for proper digestion.

Symptoms of Vitamin B1 Deficiency:

Very little thiamin is stored in the body and depletion can occur rapidly within 14 days. Severe thiamin deficiency leads to beriberi and may result in complications involving the central nervous system, brain, muscles, heart, and gastrointestinal system. Thiamine deficient persons may experience fatigue, irritability, depression and abdominal discomfort.
