The B Vitamins are eight water soluble vitamins that are involved in the metabolism of all living cells. The B vitamins act as coenzymes working together with proteins in the various enzyme systems of our body. The functions of the B Vitamins are closely related, and because of these inter-relationships, a deficient diet of one or more of these vitamins can cause deficiencies in the others by hampering their utilization. The B Complex is made up of several vitamins that work well together to support nervous system health. Vitamin B1, also called thiamin is a water soluble vitamin that is essential for the break-down of carbohydrates into glucose. Vitamin B2, also known as riboflavin is important in the breakdown of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins. Vitamin B6, also known as pyridoxine, is essential in the breakdown of carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Vitamin B12 is necessary for processing carbohydrates, proteins and fats. Vitamin B9, also known as folic acid, interacts with vitamin B12 for the synthesis of DNA. Pregnant women have an increased need for folic acid. Pantothenic acid is used in the breakdown of carbohydrates, lipids and some amino acids. Choline is also considered part of the Vitamin B Complex.

Functions of B-Complex:

The B vitamins are necessary to, support and increase the rate of metabolism, sustain healthy skin and muscle tone, improve the immune and nervous system function and encourage cell growth and division, including that of the red blood cells that help prevent anemia. B Complex vitamins also support energy metabolism. Each nutrient in the B Complex is made up of several vitamins that work well together to support the nervous system health. B Complex vitamins also promote energy metabolism. Each nutrient in the B Complex performs a unique role in maintaining good metabolic functioning and is essential for the general well being. Thiamin is also vital for the proper working of the nervous system. Riboflavin s also significant in the maintenance of the skin and mucous membranes, the cornea of the eye and for nerve sheaths. Vitamin B3, also called niacin, is required for the metabolism of food, the maintenance of healthy skin, nerves and the gastrointestinal tract. Pyridoxine is also used in the production of red blood cells. Vitamin B12 helps make all of the blood cells in our bodies. Vitamin B12 is stored in the liver. Folic acid is also essential for the breakdown of proteins and the formation of hemoglobin. Folic acid is produced by bacteria in the stomach and intestines. Pantothenic acid is produced by bacteria in the intestines for the breakdown of carbohydrates, lipids and some amino acids. Choline a constituent of lecithin, facilitates the movement of fat from the liver and into cells, and it is ought to be present before Vitamin A can be stored.

Symptoms of B-Complex Deficiency:

Deficiency of thiamin can cause beriberi, wernicke's encephelopathy, and sensitivity of the teeth, cheeks and gums. A deficiency of riboflavin can cause skin disorders, anemia, light sensitive eyes, and inflammation of the soft tissue lining around the mouth and nose. Deficiency of niacin causes the disease, pellagra. Deficiency of the B vitamins causes skin disorders, disruption of the nervous system, confusion, poor coordination and insomnia. Deficiency of vitamin B12 causes mouth irritation, brain damage, and a disease called pernicious anemia. Deficiency of folic acid causes anemia, poor growth, and irritation of the mouth.
