General information about the ingredients used in this supplement product:

(This is NOT product specific and is only listed as educational material)

The B vitamins assist in maintaining the health of the nerves, skin, eyes, hair, liver, and mouth, as well as healthy muscle tone in the gastrointestinal tract and proper brain function. B-complex vitamins act as coenzymes, aiding enzymes to react chemically with other substances, and are involved in energy production. Sufficient intake of the B vitamins is imperative for elderly people because these nutrients are not as well absorbed as we age. The B vitamins can be broken down into vitamin B1 thiamine, vitamin B2 riboflavin, vitamin B3 niacin, vitamin B5 pantothenic acid, vitamin B6 Pyridoxine, vitamin B12, biotin, choline, folate, inositol and para-aminobenzoic acid. Consumption of sufficient amounts of riboflavin and folic acid is important during pregnancy, because a lack of this vitamin can damage a developing fetus. Riboflavin is needed for the metabolism of the amino acid tryptophan, which is converted into niacin in the body. Vitamin B3 is needed for proper circulation and healthy skin. Pantothenic acid helps in the production of the adrenal hormones and the formation of antibodies, aids in vitamin utilization, and helps to convert fats, carbohydrates, and proteins into energy. Pyridoxin is beneficial for water retention, and is necessary for the production of hydrochloric acid and the absorption of fats and protein. Vitamin B12 is associated with the production of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that assists memory and learning. Folic acid also helps in regulating homocysteine levels. Homocysteine is an amino acid that is naturally formed in the body as the result of the breakdown of another amino acid methionine.

Functions of Vitamin B:

Vitamin B Complex is required for the appropriate functioning of almost every process in the body. Thiamine enhances circulation and assists in blood formation, carbohydrate metabolism, and the production of hydrochloric acid which is important for proper digestion. Thiamine also acts as an antioxidant. Riboflavin is essential for red blood cell formation, antibody production, cell respiration, and growth. Riboflavin alleviates eye fatigue and is important in the prevention and treatment of cataracts and it helps in the use of oxygen by the tissues of the skin, nails, and hair and helps in the absorption of iron and vitamin B6 (pyridoxine). Vitamin B3 aids in the functioning of the nervous system, metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and protein and in the production of hydrochloric acid for the digestive system. Niacin lowers cholesterol and improves circulation. Pantothenic acid is essential for all the cells in the body as it is involved in the production of neurotransmitters. Pantothenic acid is also a stamina enhancer and prevents certain forms of anemia and it is required for the normal functioning of the gastrointestinal tract. Pyridoxine also helps in maintaining sodium and potassium balance and promotes red blood cell formation. Pyridoxine activates many enzymes and aids in the absorption of vitamin B12, in immune system function and antibody production. Vitamin B12 is required to prevent anemia and it helps folic acid in regulating the formation of red blood cells, and helps in the utilization of iron by the body. Vitamin B12 also prevents nerve damage and promotes normal growth and development by maintaining the fatty sheaths that cover and protect nerve endings. Biotin helps in cell growth, fatty acid production, metabolism of carbohydrates, fats, and proteins and in the utilization of the other B-complex vitamins. Choline is required for the proper transmission of nerve impulses through the central nervous system, gallbladder regulation, liver function, and lecithin formation. Choline is vita for brain function and memory. Folic acid is a brain food, and it is needed for energy production and the formation of red blood cells. Folic acid strengthens the immunity and helps in the proper formation and functioning of white blood cells. Folic acid functions as a coenzyme in DNA and RNA synthesis, it is vital for healthy cell division and replication. Folic acid is involved in protein metabolism and has been used in the prevention and treatment of folic acid anemia. Inositol is vital for hair growth and it has a calming effect and helps to reduce cholesterol levels and helps to prevent hardening of the arteries and is important in the formation of lecithin and the metabolism of fat and cholesterol.

Symptoms of Vitamin B Deficiency:

Vitamin B2 deficiency causes inflammation of the lining of the mouth and skin. Vitamin B3 deficiency causes inflammation of the skin, vagina, rectum and mouth, as well as mental slowing. Vitamin B6 deficiency leads to inflammation of the skin and mouth, nausea, vomiting, dizziness, weakness and anemia. Deficiency of vitamin B12 leads to insufficient and enlarged red blood cells (megaloblastic anemia), as can be seen in pernicious anemia. Deficiency of folic acid leads to insufficient and enlarged red blood cells (megaloblastic anemia).
