General information about the ingredients used in this supplement product:

(This is NOT product specific and is only listed as educational material)

Ornithine is a non-essential amino acid which is made by the body from the amino acid arginine. It is metabolized during the production of urea and is required by the body as it is the precursor of citrulline, proline and glutamic acid. Ornithine is also important because it induces the release of growth hormone in the body helping in fat metabolism. Arginine and Ornithine are required for a properly functioning immune system and liver health. They are also helpful in healing and repairing the skin and tissue and are present in both these body parts. There are some unsupported claims that ornithine promotes muscle building, but this has not yet been proven.

Functions of Arginine Ornithine:

Arginine and Ornithine also help feed the pituitary gland in the brain which is the source of growth hormones. This is vital for all the body organs like tissues, bones, organs, arteries, etc. Arginine is very essential for protein metabolism and optimum growth of the body. The primary role of arginine is to stimulate the enzyme that starts the urea cycle, converting ammonia into a less toxic compound called urea. This urea is carried by the blood to the kidneys for excretion.

Symptoms of Arginine Ornithine Deficiency:

Deficiency of Ornithine is unlikely as it is produced by the body, but depletion can occur due to rapid growth or pregnancy, and after severe trauma or due to malnutrition. Arginine deficiency can show symptoms of muscle weakness very similar to muscular dystrophy. Arginine deficiency hampers with glucose production, liver lipid metabolism and insulin production. Some deficiencies of arginine or ornithine are due to the presence of excessive ammonia in the blood. Some arginine and ornithine deficiencies are associated with excessive lysine, protein deficiency, rash, hair loss and hair breakage, poor wound healing, constipation, fatty liver, hepatic cirrhosis, and hepatic coma.

Good Food Sources of Arginine Ornithine:

Dietary arginine is found in chocolate, wheat germ, flour, buckwheat, granola, oatmeal, dairy products like cottage cheese, ricotta, non-fat dry milk, skim yogurt, beef, pork, bacon, ham, nuts, seeds of pumpkin, sesame and sunflower, chicken, turkey, lobster, salmon, shrimp, snails, tuna, chick peas, and cooked soybeans. Ornithine is found in meat, fish, dairy, and eggs.
