General information about the ingredients used in this supplement product:

(This is NOT product specific and is only listed as educational material)

Arginine is an α-amino acid classified as a semi-essential or conditionally essential amino acid. The production of arginine in the body is dependent on the developmental stage and health status of the individual. Arginine has a role in cell division, healing wounds, removing ammonia from the body and in the functioning of the immune system. Ornithine is the by-product of the action of the enzyme arginase on L-arginine creating urea. Ornithine is the central part of the urea cycle and allows the disposal of excess nitrogen in the body.

Functions of Arginine Ornithine:

Arginine and ornithine metabolizes protein for the optimum growth of the body. Protein is important for the organs like tissues, bones, and arteries. Arginine stimulates the enzyme to starts the urea cycle, converting ammonia into urea. The urea is then carried by the blood to the kidneys for excretion. They help feed the pituitary gland, which is the source of growth hormone.

Symptoms of Arginine Ornithine Deficiency:

Ornithine deficiency is very unlikely as it is easily produced by the body, but depletion of ornithine can happen because of rapid growth or pregnancy, and after severe trauma or due to malnutrition. Symptoms of arginine deficiency are muscle weakness very similar to muscular dystrophy. The deficiency of arginine hampers in glucose production, liver lipid metabolism and insulin production. Some Arginine and Ornithine deficiencies are also linked with excessive lysine, protein deficiency, rash, hair loss and hair breakage, poor wound healing, constipation, fatty liver, hepatic cirrhosis, and hepatic coma.

Good Food Sources of Arginine Ornithine:

Wheat germ and flour, buckwheat, granola, oatmeal, dairy products like cottage cheese, ricotta, nonfat dry milk, skim yogurt, chocolate, beef, pork, bacon, ham, nuts, seeds of pumpkin, sesame and sunflower, chicken, turkey, lobster, salmon, shrimp, snails, tuna, chick peas, and cooked soybeans are sources of dietary arginine. Good food sources of ornithine are meat, fish, dairy, and eggs.
