General information about the ingredients used in this supplement product:

(This is NOT product specific and is only listed as educational material)

Cod liver oil is a nutritional supplement derived from liver of cod fish. Cod liver oil contains large amounts of eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA); both are omega-3 fatty acids with very high levels of vitamin A and vitamin D which is useful for the circulatory system. Cod Liver formulas disperse (emulsify) the oils into millions of tiny droplets for superior absorption, assimilation and utilization. The flavor and aroma of Cod Liver Oil range from a mild sardine-like flavor to an intense odor of fish and oil highly depending on the quality of the oil. High quality cod liver oil is a pale-yellow, thin, oily liquid, having a slightly fishy and bland taste. Sometimes flavorings such as citrus or mint essence are added to cod liver oil to make it more palatable.

Functions of Cod Liver Oil:

DHA is a fatty acid that is essential to the health of our nervous system and eyes. EPA is a fatty acid that promotes a healthy cardiovascular system and decreases inflammation throughout the body. The anti-inflammatory properties of EPA are especially helpful to people suffering with arthritis. EPA is also closely linked to our emotional health, and possibly preventing depression. Vitamin A is necessary for proper vision, healthy skin, and strong mucosal linings, including the lining of the digestive tract. Many skin and digestive disorders cannot fully heal without a reliable supply of vitamin A. Vitamin D is essential to maintaining strong bones and teeth. It enhances the strength and efficiency of the immune system. Vitamin D helps the body to regulate its blood sugar levels, and is a factor in preventing type II diabetes. Vitamin D is one of several nutrients that are necessary for preventing high blood pressure.

Symptoms of Cod Liver Oil Deficiency:

Vitamin D deficiency can occur where the intake of the vitamin over time is lower than recommended levels and the exposure to sunlight is limited. It can also occur if the kidneys are not able to convert Vitamin D into its active form. The absorption of the vitamin from the digestive tract is insufficient. Rickets and Osteomalacia are the classic examples of Vitamin D deficiency diseases. Rickets is a disease characterized by soft bones and skeletal deformities. Vitamin D-deficient diets are directly associated with milk allergy or milk intolerance, and very strict vegetarianism. Vitamin A deficiency causes skin disorders, increased susceptibility to infection, nyctalopia, xeropthalmia and other eye disorders, anorexia, and sterility.

Good Food Sources of Cod Liver Oil:

Vitamin A is mostly found in breads, cereals, and other grains, fruits, vegetables, milk, cheese, yogurt, meat, poultry, fish, liver, egg yolks, the fat component of dairy products and cod liver oil. Only few foods in the nature contain vitamin D. Fish such as salmon, mackerel, and tuna and fish liver oils are the best sources. Vitamin D is found in beef liver, cheese, and egg yolks in small amounts.
